Merv rating is a great way to judge an air filter's efficacy in filtering out air pollutants. The MERV acronym stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, where 16 is the highest rating. Many agencies recommend various MERV ratings, as for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) recommends a minimum of Merv 8 rating. Air filters with Merv 8 rating can trap an average of 3 to 10 micron sized air particles at a 70% to 85% efficiency.
