When your vacuum is running a little slower and it starts taking multiple passes to get your carpets clean, you should check your vacuum's belt. The belt is responsible for making sure the power from the motor gets to the beater brush and spinning it at a umpteen zillion miles per hour (that's real math). The spinning bristles lift the carpet and get more dirt out than would otherwise happen. For best results (and to avoid a broken belt), swap your vacuum's belt every eighteen months.
