Most machines will tell you when to descale. What they will not tell you is that the branded solution they want you to buy is usually citric acid and water at a heavy markup, sold in single-use packets.
This is the same working chemistry as a concentrate. Measure 2 to 4 tablespoons depending on your water hardness, mix with water, and run your machine's own descale cycle. One 12 fl oz bottle covers up to 12 cleanings at light dosing, or 8 at the recommended dose.
